Shorsh Saleh

Shorsh Saleh is a painter, carpet designer and weaver. As an experienced Persian carpet maker many of his paintings are inspired by the symbolic motifs used in traditional carpets, combined with contemporary imagery. His paintings focus on the subjects of migration and identity, employing the traditional techniques of miniature painting in a contemporary context. 

Born in Kurdistan, Saleh studied MA Traditional Arts at The Kings School of Traditional Arts, London, where he has been teaching carpet weaving and geometry since 2015. Saleh has exhibited in Germany, Iraqi Kurdistan, Lebanon, UK and the USA. His work was part of the ‘Prince & Patron’ exhibition at Buckingham Palace in 2018. 

A series of his works were exhibited at the Imperial War Museum, London, 2020-2021. Saleh carpets and paintings are held in the Royal Collection Trust, The Kings Foundation, the British Museum, the Bagari Foundation and the Islamic Art Museum, Malaysia. He has been teaching weaving at numerous art institutions including The Horniman Museum, the Migration Museum, Museum of Islamic Art, Doha and the V&A Museum. Saleh is teaching both flat weaving and Persian carpet weaving courses from his studio in Walmer.
