Jane Dickins

I’m an Australian artist living and working in Deal, Kent. My paintings channel mood and movement using gestural lines and brushstrokes.

Each painting begins with a series of drawings which help me understand and connect with my subject. I then paint in acrylic and gouache, using fluid strokes to create striking silhouettes of animals and people.

“I draw my inspiration from the simplicity and directness found in folk art and tribal traditions. What is most absorbing for me is the way in which it is possible to capture the spirit of your subject using only a few lines and a dynamic palette of colours.”

I began drawing and painting in 2019, and credit Japan with my understanding of mark making. While living in Japan I practiced calligraphy with a Japanese master. It was a formative experience, emphasising economy of line and the potential for meaning to be present in a single brushstroke.

I worked with Aboriginal artists in the Central Desert before moving to the UK to complete a Masters degree in prehistoric design at the University of Cambridge. This intimate experience of timeless and traditional art has become an essential resource for my own work.

I have shown at Linden Hall Studio, and been included in a number of group exhibitions, including the ING Discerning Eye 2023, 2022, 2020, Folkestone Art Gallery 2023 Spring and Winter Group Shows, and the Winter Group Show at LHS 2023, 2022, 2021, 2020, 2019.
